Electrician assessing a closed distribution board and a proposed private prepaid meter position

Assessment before equipment

Define the circuit, authority and platform first

Ownership and permission

Identify who owns the incoming meter, the private wiring and the circuit to be measured. Confirm landlord, owner, HOA, body-corporate or managing-agent authority where applicable.

Electrical interface

Inspect the closed board, supply arrangement, protection, mounting position, access and the single- or three-phase configuration as verified on site.

Meter and platform

Check the selected product, customer interface, token or vending method, communications, enclosure and environment against current product and provider information.

Scope we can document

A private installation with a visible boundary

  • Site, circuit and distribution-board assessment
  • Authorised private submeter position and mounting plan
  • Compatible customer interface where applicable
  • Safe isolation, installation and circuit integration
  • Protection, testing, identification and labelling
  • Documentation and COC implications appropriate to agreed work

Product supply, billing administration, vending services, landlord permissions, utility work and repairs outside the agreed electrical scope remain separate unless expressly included after verification.

Honest quote flow

What to send for a useful assessment

Property context

Send the exact address, property and occupier arrangement, provider or account context, and the person who can authorise the work.

Safe evidence

Send photos with all covers closed, the intended metered circuit, existing board position, access limits and any meter or platform already selected.

Verified scope

We confirm ownership, compatibility and electrical scope before quoting. No tariff, saving, token availability, fixed price or utility approval is promised remotely.

Customer interface

Compatibility is checked, not assumed

A keypad or other customer interface is only one part of the system. Meter model, platform, token method, communications and electrical configuration must work together. A product selected online is not automatically suitable for the existing board, vending administrator or property arrangement.

No page instruction should be used to open live equipment, bypass a meter, break a seal, manipulate tokens or defeat revenue protection.

Questions before booking

Private prepaid-meter FAQs

What is the difference between a private submeter and a utility revenue meter?

A private submeter measures a downstream circuit on the customer's own reticulation behind the existing supply meter. A utility or municipal revenue meter forms part of the provider's metering and account process and is not treated as ordinary private electrical work.

Who can authorise a private prepaid-meter installation?

The person or entity with authority over the property and relevant private circuit must approve the work. Depending on the property, that may include the owner, landlord, body corporate, HOA, managing agent or another responsible party.

What details are needed for an assessment?

Provide the exact address, property and occupier arrangement, supply-provider or account context, ownership permission, intended metered circuit, safe photos of closed boards, selected meter or platform information, and access constraints.

Is landlord or body-corporate approval required?

It may be. Rentals, sectional-title properties, estates and managed sites can involve private, common and utility-owned boundaries. Written authority should be clarified before work is scheduled.

Will any prepaid meter work with my vending platform?

Compatibility cannot be assumed. The product, platform, token method, communication method, enclosure, environment and electrical arrangement must be checked against current provider and product information.

Could the existing distribution board need work?

Possibly. The board, protection, available space, circuit identification, isolation and wiring condition are assessed. Any additional board work is scoped separately and only when genuinely required.

What if the sealed utility meter is faulty or appears tampered with?

Do not open it, break seals, bypass it or attempt a reset. Report utility-owned meters, seals, service cables, account configuration and network equipment to the owning municipality or utility through its authorised process.
